Day 1, May 17th
On May 17th members from the community led by Angela Ferguson from the Onondaga Nation planted a Three Sisters Garden in recognition of the Two Row Wampum- Gä•sweñta’ or The Silver Covenant Chain of Friendship Treaty. You can read more about that the treaty here. The space is mean to reestablish peace between indigenous and non-indigenous people through the fostering of native food plants.
Mounds were raked in accordance to tradition, with 6 corn seeds planted in a circle at its top, 6 squash seeds planted on its sides, and a sunflower planted in the middle. Bean seeds are added once the corn reaches a few inches high.
The community of Pittsburgh will be caring for the garden throughout the growing season until harvest time, when Angela will return to receive the seeds we’ve grown and for a feast of celebration.
The garden is located in an unaddressed lot, next to 5430 Penn Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa 15206. If you are interested in getting involved please reach out to: fermentpittsburgh@gmail.com
