Hello! Join us on Wednesday July 30th from 6pm- 8pm for a “Transitioning to Market Gardening” Workshop, presented by the City of Pittsburgh City Farms program together with Ferment Pittsburgh and One by Spork.
Description: Over the course of two months this winter we transitioned a raised bed garden lot into an in-ground high-production market mini-farm on Penn avenue. We will talk about making the leap from raised beds to in-ground growing, space layout, general considerations, thinking more like a farm than a garden regardless of size, and basic ideas of crop selection and rotation strategies.
This workshop is meant to be a casual introduction to growers who are interested in either bumping up production, moving into the ground from raised beds, and/ or are thinking about beginning to sell their produce. This first part of the multi-part workshop series will focus on basic concepts to help you decide whether this is the right direction for you, and how to begin planning and implementing any changes you’ll need to make. Come tour the site and bring your own curiosity and questions.
Later parts in the series will include Pt. 2 that will go over specifics like crop plans and economics, and Pt 3. will take you through a real day of harvesting, washing, and bringing things to a market stand.
Registration: Pre-registration only. The space will be limited so we can focus on each person’s individual situation. New workshops will be scheduled as more registrations come in. If you cannot attend this date you are encouraged to register and select “Waitlist for another date.” We will do as many workshops of each part in the series as there is interest. Workshops are FREE. Pre-register at this link.
