Backyard Grains Workshop Tuesday September 25th 6pm-8pm
In this workshop participants will be introduced to growing grains on a small-scale for personal consumption. Topics covered will include:
- Choosing which varieties to grow
- Preparing your lawn to become a field of grains
- Plot rotation
- Hands-on demos of grain processing
Together we will be planting a small plot of heritage grains in an urban front yard.

This session will be lead by brothers Nick and Justin Lubecki. Nick is head farmer of the Braddock Farms of GrowPgh. Previously had operated his own farm under the name Butter Hill Farm. Justin is founder of Ferment Pittsburgh and food pop-up series Friendship Bagel. Together Nick and Justin have been testing subsistence farming methods at their small farm in Butler, Pa. They have experimented with different modern and ancient varieties of grains from wheat, rice, barley, corn, and emmer. This is the first time they will be doing a workshop together.
